Size and pose
- Portrait photo, 35 mm wide × 45 mm high.
- Head from chin to top is 29–34 mm.
- Face forward, eyes open, mouth closed, neutral expression.
- No glasses. If you normally wear them, remove them for the photo.
- Taken within the last month, in colour.
Background and clothing
- Plain white, off-white, or light grey background.
- No patterns, shadows, or objects behind you.
- No hats or head coverings, unless religious or medical and your full face is visible.
- No uniforms, headphones, filters, or heavy retouching.
Digital upload
If you apply online, the photo is uploaded rather than printed.
Take it on a phone
Even light and a plain wall matter more than the camera.
Light
Face a window or an even light. Avoid a lamp directly behind you or hard shadows on the background.
Angle
Hold the phone at eye level, straight on. Do not shoot from above or below.
Framing

No. HM Passport Office requires your eyes to be visible and does not accept glasses in new passport photos, except in limited medical cases.
What is the head height for a UK passport photo?
